Wow does this MCM Versa-Tile have some weight to it! And it’s absolutely stunning. It looks like an Italian Red Orange crackle glaze without the crackle. It’s completely smooth. Stark and shadowed so nicely with black shading accents around the edges, this is truly too good looking to be used as an ashtray.
Might I suggest a large sushi dish with a left and right side chopstick holder where cigarettes were intended. Or, do as I do, and place gorgeous vintage ashtrays around your house on coffee tables, end tables, and console tables…for that perfect “pop” of color. They work extremely well, while holding a low profile and taking up little space. And, no I don’t even smoke!
Made in Waterloo, Ontario, it has been suggested this piece may have been designed by Quebec ceramist artist Claude Vermette. The artist did some tiles walls in the Montreal subway stations in the 60's. However, this piece is not marked by Vermette, nor dated.
